Jonathan was eleven years old when he discovered the world beneath the sea. The first intrepid forages with a mask and snorkel had him captivated and he would stay in the water until he was shivering with cold and his lips had turned blue. As a teenager he designed and, with the help of his father, built his first underwater camera housing. The early photos were blurry black and white images but were the start of a continued fascination for capturing images of the creatures below the waves.
On leaving school he qualified as a mine clearance diver in the Navy.
After leaving the navy he worked as a Diver Scientist and Diving Supervisor on oceanographic and coastal engineering research projects designing, fabricating and maintaining underwater instrumentation deployed on the seabed.
During this time he also piloted an aerial survey aircraft acquiring photogrammetric data of the southern African coastline for the Oceanographic Research Institute of the CSIR.
Several years later after completing his Masters thesis he joined the academic staff of the Faculty of Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology where he progressed to Head of Department.
In 1995 he resigned this position in order to complete a single handed trans-Atlantic voyage from Cape Town to the Caribbean (6000nm / 11000km) in his 9 metre sailing boat.
After cruising the islands he was offered a position as captain of a hydrographic survey vessel working for the offshore oil industry in Trinidad and Venezuela.
Jonathan moved to the United Kingdom to live with his wife in 2000 where his connection with the sea and underwater technology has continued till present day with work offshore in various locations around the world.
Having retired from the offshore oil industry, where he was working freelance as a registered Underwater Inspection Controller and team leader, he has been able to concentrate full time on his passion for scuba diving, underwater photography and videography.
When not travelling on frequent overseas trips he and his wife, Rosemary, spend the summer months at their apartment on the Cote d’Azur where diving excursions are mainly with Rand’eau évasion based in Villefranche-sur-Mer.
